Passenger Locked In Empty Plane
Four hours later a cleaning crew discovered this passenger and alerted the Transportation Security Administration which then detained and interrogated her.
McGuire described waking up on an empty plane and not being able to leave as "horrifying." United Airlines and Trans State Airlines, the airline operating the United Express flight that McGuire was on, are investigating what happened. Prior to departing a plane a flight attendant is supposed to complete a sweep of the airplane to make certain that no passengers remain, according to Trans States. It is trying to determine whether that procedure was in fact followed after this plane landed. Once the investigation is complete, the airlines will determine what policies and processes need to be be adjusted, or simply followed.
United Airlines announced that it is working with Trans States to determine how a passenger could be locked on a plane and "remedy" the situation with the passenger. It is not determined whether or not the passenger had an responsibility in this situation, nor how she could sleep through the landing, unloading, ect.
McGuire has filed a lawsuit requesting between $25,000 and $75,000. She alleges negligence, infliction of emotional distress, false imprisonment and breach of contract.
Her lawyer has raised the question if his client could fly asleep on a plane and go undetected how difficult would it be for someone who is really trying to go undetected? Given the full planes flying today, is it extremely odd that nobody would notice, or wake this sleeping passenger if they were sitting in their seat normally.
