Removing background from an image, logo, using Corel or other?

I have a logo for my business with a globe on the left and then it has my business name. I want to put in on a green background but when I do, there is a white background behind my logo.

How do I remove that background, and just have my graphic and words (so I can place it on any color background)?

(I have access to Corel and Microsoft publisher, maybe more. Which program should I do this on and what does the 'graphic+words' logo need to be saved as? (a gif?)

(I've done it before with just the globe, a circle shape, but I don't know what to do with the lettering.)

Just off the top of my head... I have Corel 11 on my desktop pc but not on this machine I'm presently using.

If I remember right you could simply click on "new" and when you do you should be able to select the size of the image, the dpi and the background color. You could then cut and paste what you want from your present file onto the new image. You will likely have to retype the text using this method.

Or you could simply open your present file and if I remember correctly click on "image" and select replace colors. Then simply replace white with the new color you want. The problem with this method is if there is any white anywhere on your file besides the background then that will also be replaced with the new color. To fix this you could first use the round masking tool and mask the globe and then click on edit and copy. Then do your color change and finally click on edit and paste as new object and that should take care of the problem.

Still another method would be to use a reverse mask. Mask your globe and somewhere you will find a selection from the menu to reverse the mask - then do your color change, changing white to the green you want and remove the mask and that should do it.

There may also be a simpler way of simply selecting the background [perhaps in properties?] and simply change the background color. If that's possible then that would be the easiest method of all but I've never used such a feature. You might try searching under help for "change background color".

Finally, if you wanted to save the file with a transparent background you would be given that option when saving as a gif file. Again if you kept the white background when doing this any white in your globe image would also be transparent.
